Street food at Rua da Ressurreição, Macau – 街头食品, 澳門

On your route to the ruins of St. Paul you’ll have to go through an authentic food experience that will put your will and wallet to test: Resurrection Street or ‘Rua da Ressurreição‘.

This old cobblestoned street is maybe the main and most straight one leading to the Ruins of St. Paul, being also a foodie’s paradise; an all-in-one for Macanese and Chinese finger food, as well as tourist trinkets, but the most important part are the free samples the shops give away! Hooray for gluttony!

Here are some delicacies you’ll get all along this rua:

• Known as rougan or bakkwa (肉干), here below is a sweet and salty flavoured dried meat, similar to jerky, served in flat, thin sheets. Cantonese speakers use the term yuhk gōn‘.

• Almond biscuits (also known as almond cookies) are also typical and genuine Macanese:

• A favourite of mine is the pork chop bun. The bread is crispy outside and very soft inside. A freshly fried pork chop fills the bun, with no additions of any kind.

This shop below brags about being the set for an episode of a famous TV series (right to the LED number display, a poster with captions of the moment).

• Finally, the lesser known phoenix egg roll with seaweed and shredded pork meat as a filling. There are many fillings to choose, but the presentation is always the same:

• And last but not least, my all-time favourite pastry: Portuguese egg tarts!
